The Genie (Why the Pacers may have sold themselves short of a championship before the playoffs even start)

"Aight fellas! Now what?"
Alexander Woolcott, the famous actor and writer, once said, “Many of us spend half of our time wishing for things we could have if we didn’t spend half our time wishing.” George Eliot, the English novelist, broke it down like this, “When we get to wishing a great deal for ourselves, whatever we get soon turns into mere limitation and exclusion.” Then Big Momma kicked in the front door and said, “Be careful what you ask for baby because you just might get it.”

The Indiana Pacers spent the entire offseason and this regular season wishing for the No.1 seed in the East. Well…after rubbing the bottle long enough the Genie jumped out rockin’ some Red Bottom sneakers, some True Religion jeans and a Tom Ford top holding the No. 1 seed. Boyz got what they’ve been asking for, now what are they gonna do with it playboy?

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! There is power in wishing and setting goals. All the Pacers have been talking about this year is getting the No. 1 seed and now they have it. Here’s the problem bruh, not one cat has said a mumbling word about winning a championship!

If the goal was to become the top seed in the East since the beginning of the season then they’ve already won. They’ve accomplished everything they set out to do. Here’s the problem bruh, the playoffs haven’t even started yet.

Oh, here’s the other problem playa, the Miami Heat have been puttin’ in work and rubbing the bottle too. However, they’ve been asking for a third straight title not the top seed in the East. Yes, they realize that the top seed puts them in a better position to win the title but the emphasis wasn’t just getting the top seed it was on winning it all.

It’s like a dun that gets a single wish from the Genie that asks for millions of dollars instead of asking for the capacity to earn millions of dollars. See if all you ask for are the millions then that’s all you’re gonna get bruh! But if you obtain the capacity to earn millions there is no limit to how much bread you can make.

Focusing only on the top seed is to some degree a death wish going into the playoffs because there wasn’t a goal set beyond that. Here’s another problem boyz aren’t thinking about around this piece. The Pacers have completely focused all of their energy around beating one team, the Miami Heat. In the process, they ran out and wasted a million dollars on Andrew Bynum instead of just giving me a half a million to tell them that it wasn’t gonna work from jump. By focusing squarely on the Heat they haven’t prepared mentally for the other duns sittin' on the stoop in the East.

Do you really think cats like Brooklyn, Chicago, Toronto and even Atlanta are gonna just lay down and let Indiana and Miami fight over the apple? They still gotta earn it playa and the way the East is shapin’ up right up now ain’t nothin’ guaranteed. Everybody's hungry and it's only so much food on the table and Big Momma isn't cooking anymore.

In the 24 years that I’ve been in Corporate America and selling insulin for the past 14, I’ve learned a lot of things. But the most important has been in the art of setting specific goals. I've been able to accomplish whatever I write down and focus on. However, if it's not on the list it's gonna get missed bruh. Why? Because my action steps aren't focused on what's not on the list.

The Pacers goal was to get the top seed and subconsciously the mind moves you into a position to make those things happen. However, if there isn’t a goal beyond that you get dropped off right at the original goal playboy. Trust and believe that pimpin'!

Now you’ve got to remember that the Philistine on South Beach and his army have set the goal of winning a title not just getting the number one seed. That’s the difference between championship caliber teams and those that aren’t. They set goals to win the ultimate prize or should I say they asked the Genie for the capacity to earn the millions instead of just asking for the millions. Now we've got to sit in the cut and watch it all play out. Will Indiana surprise us and themselves by being able to push beyond the original goal or will they just be cool with getting the top seed in the East? I'm just sayin'!
