"Man if this dun doesn't let me go. I swear....!" |
Well playas...for 99.999 percent of duns walkin' around this joint bein' star struck is a way of life. So to tell a boy not to idolize these cats is like speakin' French in the ghetto and not in New Orleans bruh. Sports is America's past time and it doesn't matter whether you like football, basketball, baseball, hockey or golf. Pick your poison playboy and it's all good with me. We spend countless hours watchin' our favorite sport or sports durin' the course of our lives and quite frankly it's a blast. I'm a huge college football fan and have followed the Oklahoma Sooners since I was probably 6 years old and for about 14 years I was a season ticket holder.
I'm quite sure that you have a favorite team or player as well. It's a lot of fun keepin' up with them and schedulin' your week around their games etc. But what I wanna holla a boy about today is when does bein' a fan go too far and a boy tips over into the terror dome of bein' a groupie?
So many cats become groupies and don't realize it bruh. Well...maybe they do and just don't care. Let's look at what they both are and you can determine which category you fall into.
FAN is short for fanatic! Now bein' a fan of a team or a particular player is completely permissible. You're simply takin' an interest in a team or player because you like the way they play the game or you admire what they've gone through to get to this point in their careers etc.
For example, I'm a huge fan of Kevin Garnett because of his passion for the game. He's the only guy in the NBA that plays a Tuesday night February game like it's the NBA Finals. He's played that way since he was in high school in Chicago. There aren’t very many people that understand that passion opens the door to greatness at every level of life. KG completely gets it! So that's why I've been a KG fan since '95 bruh.
I'm also a LeBron fan because of the way he's been able to excel without havin' a father in his life and havin' an unstable mother. Regardless of what you may have thought of "The decision" or his ability to win championships etc. he's never been in trouble and always handles himself like a true professional and he's just not just talkin' hood loyalty he's showin' you hood loyalty. Just last week the dun committed to sendin' more than 1,100 students in Akron, Ohio to college and that number over the next 4 years could swell to 2,300. I wrote a Hot Joint entitled "Loyalty" on why his legacy would be much GREATER than Jordan's just off of that power move alone bruh. I'm just sayin'!
I'm an Sooner fan because as child I loved the way they ran the wishbone in the '70's & '80's. I was a running back so I liked watchin' the team that ran the ball better than anyone else.
So in other words, bein' a fan is simply respectin' duns/teams for the way they get down. If you see the cat on the street you give him a pound and keep it movin' bruh. It's just simple as that. Respect a boy and keep steppin'.
Now bein' a groupie is like bein' on a whole different planet! Groupies don't operate with rational behavior at all. They run into a player and want to be the cats best friend right away. They completely overstep their bounds and become intrusive. The groupie is the person that wants to talk way too much and take pictures when it's not appropriate, like while the athlete is eatin' with his/her family. Then gets upset and tells everybody that they weren't very friendly. You know the drill, "Man I met KD and he was a complete jerk! He wouldn't even take a picture with me." Well...yeah...the dun had a chicken bone in his mouth and you were standin' over his table talkin' him to death while he was with his family.
Here's another one bruh, "Allen Iverson was a punk man! He ain't ish." but they didn't say how much of a punk they were to A.I.. They just destroy the player's reputation because they were an over zealous groupie.

The ultimate sucker move! |
The groupie always wants an autograph or has some silly request. I just believe that takin' picture with or askin' for an autograph from a player is for kids only of when you've established some type rapport. The worse move of all time was when former Dallas Cowboys RB Tashard Choice asked for Michael Vick's autograph after a game a few years ago. Complete sucker move. Now don’t get me wrong I’ve got a house full of autographed memorabilia but it’s all from people that I have personal relationships with. They're my boyz! I didn't run up on some cat and ask him for his freakin' name! Wheredeydodatat?
Once you're considered an adult then you move into groupie status if you see Peyton Manning at the grocery store and stop him for a picture and you don't have your kid with you. Y'all already know how I feel about grown men in jerseys so we won't even go there again.
So the question is, "Are you a Fan or a Groupie?
Playas Thesaurus:
1) Dun: noun - the person in question, dude, guy, girl, etc. It's whoever I'm talkin' about and its non-gender specific.
