Doin' Work

Gary Harris: Big Ten Freshman of the Year

Mark Twain once said, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Albert Einstein broke it down like this, “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” William Shakespeare wrote in the masterpiece the Twelfth Night, “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

Well Michigan State’s Gary Harris is a combination of all three playboy! He was born great, achieved greatness and had it thrust upon him! On Monday he was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year! With all of the great players that have played at Michigan State he’s the very first to achieve that status! I’d say that’s greatness homeboy whether the hater’s do or not because he’ll forever be the first in school history to do it.

Despite battling injuries to his shoulder and back all season long ole boy still managed to average 13.2 points per game to help the Spartans to a 24-7 record and a runner-up finish in the Big Ten. He was 5th in the conference from down town at 41.9% and 10th in steals with 1.4 per game.

What I love about this cat being named as the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year is that all of the hater’s in Indiana that dogged this kid for not going to play for the Hoosiers have to eat crow. Duns made it personal when it shouldn’t have been. This kid made the right decision to play and go to school where he and his family thought was best and he’s shinning as a result of it.

Just because a dun is from Indiana doesn’t mean he has to play for the Hoosiers to put in work! Rick Fox and Sean May went to North Carolina, Josh McRoberts, Miles, Mason and Marshall Plummlee went to Duke, Rodney Carney went to Memphis, Jeff Teague ended up at Wake Forest and his brother Marquis went to Kentucky, Glenn Robinson went to Purdue and his son Glenn III is at Michigan, Greg Oden and Mike Conley went to Ohio State, Zach Randolph and now Gary Harris has shown up in East Lansing to play for the Spartans! I could go on but why?  Who’s fault is that? Is it on the players or the Hoosiers not being able to close the deal?

Stop blaming boyz for not playing for Indiana and blame the program for letting them get away. Call me a hater for telling it like it is but I’m just keeping it REAL. My degree says Indiana University but my mind is rational and I say stop taking personal what shouldn’t be! Give this cat his props and encourage him because he’s from the crib and we should always want to see one of our own “Doin’ Work!”  So go on wit ya bad-self playboy! All of the REAL cats out here are ridin’ with you!  Stay up and keep showing out!

Holla At Ya Boy!

  1. You know Indiana always wants to hand pick the guys they want on their roster. They don't want the big time marquee players who happen to be African American. That has hurt them for years and will continue to. Kudos to players like Gary who go to programs that will allow them to shine.
