"Cleveland bruh? Man let's get this over with!" |
The Cavs organization is a total hole and for any lottery pick taken the mission should be 3 and out of that hole they call the Cavaliers organization. There is a reason why certain teams consistently lose, it's called management. Whenever you see a team at the bottom of the league every year it's not the players that are the problem. There is a reason why the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Cubs, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Royals lose every year.
It's not the players because they're all on scholarship too. They're getting the same money the Lakers, Heat, Celtics players etc are getting. They live the same lifestyle, drive the same cars, date the same type of women and pop the same bottles. So don't think that because the Cavs have the first pick and will probably take Kyrie Irving from Duke that things are going to turn around.
Dan Gilbert is one of the worse owners in sports. Let's keep it real, any owner that would write a former player the letter that he wrote Lebron after he decided to leave has people skills problems. The fact that he was crazy enough to write a letter like that shows a clear lack of leadership and respect for his players and therefore, will have problems getting future free agents to come play for him. Why would any kid with options want to play for him? When the 216 area code pops up guys are letting it go straight to voice mail.
Kyrie has probably already made up his mind to sign the standard 3 year $10 million deal and have already marked his calendar for his exit out of Cleveland. Believe it or not every player in the world with the potential of playing in the NBA watched how Gilbert handled that situation and it will haunt him for the rest of his career. When he approaches potential free agents in public they're saying, "Naw... I'm cool."
LeBron was a 26 year player at the time and wasn‘t responsible for running a franchise. So he can make questionable decisions and still be alright. Making it to the Finals in his first year was an over achievement, like him or not. Yeah, he choked but how will Gilbert's reaction to the situation affect his ability to get players going forward? He'll be able to draft because kids don't have a choice as to where they play. However, free agency is another beast that he won't be able to overcome.
I don't see very many guys lining up to play for him and by the way have you ever been to Cleveland? Not very many young rich millionaires are breaking their necks to go to Northern Ohio to live. The only reason they had LeBron for seven years was because he was from nearby Akron and he was at home! Good luck with that!

I agree definitely, there is a reason bad organizations are bad organizations. It's takes a concerted effort to build a winner...a la Lakers, Yankees, Twins, Spurs, etc. Dan Gilbert was way out of line with the letter he wrote and I couldn't see myself playing for a owner like that. However, I will say that the mistake Cleveland made was constantly adding overpriced veteran after overpriced veteran to placate Lebron instead saving the cap space to sign a certified #2 guy (bad contract for Larry Hughes, trading for Shaq and Jamison). Also, they went the wrong route on a coach. Brown was merely a figurehead, Lebron ran the whole organization and anybody will tell you, players make bad coaches and GM's. Because like you always say, players don't take their heart of the game, they want to trade for the buddy or they want their best friend on the club to get playing time. Prime example in Cleveland, in 2010 the Cavs won over 50 games with JJ Hickson as their PF, he is young and athletic..exactly the kind of PF that gives the Celtics and KB problems. What did the Cavs do? They traded for Jamison (Lebron signed off on the deal), benched Hickson, and KG killed them in the playoffs. Not only do they lose in the playoffs to the Celtics, they are still stuck with Jamison's massive contract and LBJ is gone...bad decision by a franchise. They could have save those $$ on Jamison and Shaq's expiring deal, re-signed LBJ and got a bonafied #2 superstar. And don't give me that crap that no-one wants to come to Cleveland, players do want to play with a contender...hence why San Antonio has been so competitive, along with OKC, Boston, etc...after you get all the bling from your initial contract, you worry about your legacy and winning. Cleveland hamstrung themselves with that deal..bad franchise making bad decisions.
ReplyDeleteNow as far as Mr. Irving goes, I hope that he has an impactful career before plotting his departure from Cleveland. Anything could happen: he could be a bust, injury, etc. Trust me, Greg Oden was a can't miss prospect and he is praying for a contract offer from Portland or any other team. My advice for Mr. Irving, get your butt to training camp, bust your tail off, and make yourself a desireable asset before planning to leave Cleveland...I would hate to see you begging the Cavs for a job in 3 yrs!!
