"This didn't happen, you just thought it did!" |
You can't erase history. Just put the school on probation and keep it moving. You can't tell people that something didn't happen when it did. Taking the championship trophy out of the football facility and taking the banner down doesn't erase the memory of it.
I remember when the NCAA stripped all of the wins and the Final Four from the Fab Five. I thought that it was the dumbest thing that I've ever heard of. You can't tell me that Chris Weber and Co. didn't change the game of basketball and it's flare. So to act like they didn't exist is stupid. Furthermore, it was several years later before the Chris Weber scandal even surfaced. So to punish the school is unfair if they weren't aware of the violations at the time.
I saw what I saw and I'm sticking with my story. Did Reggie Bush run all over the Sooners? Yes! Did having improper benefits help him to make us look silly? No! Did he break the rules? Yes! But to have the school vacate the wins is way over the top. Are they going to go pick up all of the players national title rings and memorabilia as well?
I completely understand what the intent of the ruling is because Bush has since been ruled an ineligible player. However, at the time the school didn't know that. So why punish USC if they didn't know that he and his parents were receiving improper benefits at the time. Taking his Heisman was in my opinion, appropriate and justified. However, to go back seven years later to take away the title is excessive.
Not only did the BCS ruling vacate the results of the 2005 Orange Bowl, the national title game for 2004, it also vacated the Trojans participation in the 2006 Rose Bowl, in which USC lost to Texas, 41-38, in the championship game. So does the official record show Texas playing themselves for the title? Silly right?
So what I need to happen before we even kick off the 2011 season is for all ineligible guys to raise their hands so that you don't waste my time. We’ll just let you play in the NFL this season that way we can act like it didn't happen because it really won't.
